WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?
Jane Madison has a problem. Or two. Or three.
She's working as a librarian, trapped in absurd period costumes and serving up expensive lattes, all in an effort to keep her employer's budget in the black. She has a desperate crush on her Imaginary Boyfriend, a professor who regularly uses her library. Her doting grandmother is determined to reunite her with her long-absent mother. And now she's been told that the library can't pay her a well-deserved raise – instead, she can live for free in an ancient, dusty cottage on the library grounds.
When Jane settles into her new, allergen-infested home, she discovers a hidden chamber lined with ancient books – a world-class collection on witchcraft. She begins to read a spellbook, never suspecting that she has the power to work actual magic.
Her first spell awakens a smart-mouthed feline familiar. Her second makes her irresistible to men, starting with her geeky, shy co-worker.
Those magical workings attract the attention of the local coven, specifically the warder David Montrose. Jane resents David's interference even as she watches her powers spiral out of control. Before long, Jane doesn't know who she should listen to: her well-meaning grandmother, her down-to-earth best friend, her bitchy familiar, her besotted co-worker, her coming-around Imaginary Boyfriend, or her overbearing astral enforcer.
Girl’s Guide to Witchcraft combines the humor and single-girl angst of Bridget Jones's Diary with the fantasy magic of Harry Potter (for grown-ups!).
WHAT'S THE BUZZ?
"Fans of Shanna Swendson’s Enchanted, Inc. series will find much to love in Klasky’s zesty blend of fantasy and romance, as well as her winsome heroine. Enchanted readers will also be pleased to learn that a sequel is already in the works." -- Booklist
"This is an irresistible tale of power and love, friendship and acceptance. The main character's constant and often rambling internal dialogue is suprisingly charming and insightful, endearing readers to her playful quirkiness and private insecurities...." -- Romantic Times
"Mixing romance and genre fiction is nothing new and often quite enjoyable as the works of Catherine Asaro, Sharon Shinn and Maria Snyder can attest. While these authors have brought us science fiction and traditional fantasy with a touch of romance, Mindy Klasky's newest work Girl's Guide to Witchcraft joins a love story with urban fantasy and just a bit of humor. How can I, a professional librarian, resist any book that has one of my own in the lead? Throw in family troubles, a good friend who bakes Triple-Chocolate Madness, a familiar who prefers an alternative lifestyle plus a disturbingly good-looking mentor and you have one very interesting read ... This book is a good choice for those who like urban fantasy, romance, or just a good book and I am looking forward to more of Jane's adventures in the future." -- SF Revu
"What fun! GIRL'S GUIDE TO WITCHCRAFT is a charmer of a story from start to finish. Its appealing heroine gives whole new shades of meaning to the occupation of librarian. With her great characters and delightful prose voice, Klasky really brought this book alive for me. Recommended highly." -- Catherine Asaro (award-winning author of THE MISTED CLIFFS)
"What a hoot! Plain Jane librarian is already pulling lattes to help her library make ends meet when she gets a pay cut and a silly hat to go with it. Little does she know the silly hat is gonna go tall and pointy! I had a lot of fun with GIRL'S GUIDE TO WITCHCRAFT. Mindy Klasky has invented a whole new genre--witch lit!--wacky and oh so true-to-girl! Can't wait for the next one!" -- Jennifer Stevenson (author of TRASH, SEX, MAGIC)
