The Dreaded Word: Spreadsheets
Today, I’m over at Magical Words, talking about the business of writing. Specifically, I detail one of three spreadsheets that I use regularly — including *why* I bother, when I’m basically a math-avoiding artiste. You can read my post here:

Magical Words is a website by writers for writers (and readers who want a behind-the-scenes peak at the process of writing.) Regular posters include David B. Coe, John G. Hartness, Faith Hunter, Misty Massey, and Kalayna Price, with regular guest posts from Lucienne Diver, Diana Pharaoh Francis, C.E. Murphy, and Carrie Ryan. I think that Magical Words is one of the best communities I’ve found on the Web. Will you stop by to visit?

Mindy – Sorry it took so long to get back to this, and for not posting on MW, but:
Instead of sorting and subtotaling your spreadsheet manually, you should try using Pivot Tables. Highlight your first three columns (Date, Amount, Source), the click Insert/Pivot Table. If you’re using Excel 2007, there’s a really handy tool that will let you go from Source with monthly (you’ll have to select month, then Group/Month in the Pivot Table tools) subtotals, or Months with subtotals by Source.
If you want more information/assistance on Pivot Tables, feel free to email.

Lyn – I’ll have to experiment with this! I’ve never used Pivot Tables before. Ah… So many things to learn!
