Bookgiving Giftgiving

Looking for some perfect holiday gifts?  One size fits all?  Easy to gift-wrap?

I’d be thrilled if you would consider adding some Mindy Klasky and Morgan Keyes books to your gift pile!  Here’s the deal:

DARKBEAST, by Morgan Keyes.  If you contact One More Page books, I’ll personalize copies for you, your friends, your loved ones, whoever.  Really — they’ll get the book out for you in time for the end of Chanukah, or well before Christmas.  Of course, if you aren’t interested in a signed copy, you can buy the book at other stores:  Amazon | B & N | Indiebound.

The Jane Madison Series, by Mindy Klasky.  The Jane Madison Series is the story of a librarian who finds out that she’s a witch.  Girl’s Guide to Witchcraft (Amazon Kindle | B&N Nook | Smashwords) begins the series, introducing Jane to her magical abilities – as well as to her warder and her familiar.  The story continues in Sorcery and the Single Girl (Amazon Kindle | B&N Nook | Smashwords), when Jane is invited to join her exclusive local Coven.   Jane’s story concludes in Magic and the Modern Girl (Amazon Kindle | B&N Nook | Smashwords), when she discovers the consequences of letting her powers lie fallow for just a little too long.  Jane’s story continues in Capitol Magic, a Novella (Amazon Kindle | B & N Nook), where she teams up with Sarah Anderson of Fright Court to protect a rare collection of books.

FRIGHT COURT, by Mindy Klasky.  The Fright Court Series is the story of an ordinary woman who finds herself in extraordinary circumstances — serving as clerk of court to a collection of vampires, griffins, sprites, and other supernatural creatures.  Fright Court  (Amazon Kindle | B & N Nook | Smashwords) begins the series, introducing Sarah Anderson to her new life.  Sarah’s story continues in Capitol Magic, a Novella (Amazon Kindle | B & N Nook), where she teams up with Jane Madison of the Jane Madison Series to protect a rare collection of books.

The As You Wish Series, by Mindy Klasky.  The As You Wish Series shows what can go wrong when a magic lamp, a wish-granting genie, and backstage life in the theater all collide.  (Each volume of the As You Wish Series is a stand-alone novel; there is absolutely no need to read the previous books to enjoy the story!)  How Not to Make a Wish (Amazon Kindle | B & N Nook | Diesel Ebooks | Smashwords) introduces Kira Franklin, a stage manager caught in a dead-end dinner theater job when her true wish is to work on a production of Romeo and Juliet.  When Good Wishes Go Bad (Amazon Kindle | B & N Nook | Diesel Ebooks | Smashwords) shifts to dramaturg/producer Becca Morris who gets the lamp – and the opportunity to truly make a difference with a brilliant new play.  To Wish or Not To Wish (Amazon Kindle | B&N Nook | Smashwords | Diesel Ebooks ) brings the lamp to Erin Hollister, an actress who struggles to land the musical theater role of her dreams.  All three As You Wish novels are available as an omnibus (“three-in-one”) volume:  The As You Wish Series (Amazon Kindle | B&N Nook).

The Glasswrights Series, by Mindy Klasky.  The Glasswrights Series tell the story of Rani Trader, a merchant girl who witnesses an assassination and is accused of being the killer.  Even after she brings the true killer to justice, she struggles to find her place in her highly caste-bound, religious society.  Along the way, she finds close friends, false loves, and one true romance.

SEASON OF SACRIFICE, by Mindy Klasky.  Alana Woodsinger was not ready to accept the responsibility of being the religious leader of her people, but the Great Tree chose her.  Now Alana’s people count on her to guide them, to give them hope for the future.  During a spring celebration, two village children are kidnapped by wily visitors from the inland.  Alana must find a way to use her unwished-for power to guide a trio of villagers in rescuing the children.  But darker forces are soon at work and great sacrifices must be made when the children decide that they do not want to be saved…  SEASON OF SACRIFICE is available from (E-reads | Amazon Kindle | Amazon Book | B&N Nook | B&N Book | Diesel Ebooks).

Snipping Loose Ends

Just a few loose ends around here:

1.  I got a fun email from Romantic Times Book Review yesterday, telling me that they featured my As You Wish series as part of their “summer reads” series — they focused on novels with genies!  You can read about all their picks here:

http://www.rtbookreviews.com/rt-daily-blog/how-we-spent-our-summer-vacation-genies

2.  I’m going to be in Chicago for the World Science Fiction Convention (leaving husband and kitties at home, alas!)  If you’re going to be out there, and you want to connect up for coffee, a drink, whatever, let me know!  (And if you’re arriving at O’Hare around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, or leaving around 5:30 on Monday, and you want to share airport transportation, let me know that too!)

3.  Amazon just announced that it is selling electronic titles to India, by way of Amazon.com (rather than a separate website set up for the country, like Amazon.fr or Amazon.de).  So, if you’re in India, and you want to buy the Jane Madison series or the As You Wish Series or Fright Court or Capitol Magic, you are in luck!

4.  The Random Number Generator has spoken!  The winners of the two Cuttlefish ARCs, chosen from all the entries received on all the places where this blog appears are Katsurian (from LiveJournal) and Kerry (from www.mindyklasky.com).  Congrats, you two!  Send me your street addresses, and I’ll send an ARC to each of you!

OK…  Time to get back to work!

Capitol Magic – In Stores Now!

And now I can share the news (which was released in my newsletter yesterday):  Capitol Magic, a novella featuring Jane Madison (from Girl’s Guide to Witchcraft) and Sarah Anderson (from Fright Court) is now available!  Here’s everything you need to know:

Jane Madison is searching for a job that will fulfill her, enabling her to combine her peerless librarian skills with her witchcraft. Sarah Anderson, clerk of court for the District of Columbia Night Court, is just beginning to figure out what she can do as a sphinx, an ancient protector of vampires. Magic flies when Jane and Sarah team up to protect a rare collection of books. Along the way, both women need to balance personal goals, professional careers, and their often-unwieldy love lives!

This novella combines the beloved world of the Jane Madison Series with the excitement of the stand-alone novel, Fright Court. Where else can a reader find a novella of witchcraft, vampires, and cupcakes?  (Capitol Magic also contains sneak peek chapters from other Mindy Klasky novels.)  Serena Ung created the spiffy cover.

Capitol Magic is available as an ebook (Amazon Kindle | B & N Nook).  Currently, there is no print edition.

You can read the first chapter on my website.

I am thrilled that Capitol Magic is already a Kindle bestseller.  In my dream of dreams, it will hit top 20 some time this week!  I thank you, in advance, for spreading the word and making that happen!

Most Important Skill for a Writer

And this week has been a lesson in developing and managing the most important skill for a writer:  Juggling.

I’ve been editing DARKBEAST REBELLION, the second book in my DARKBEAST series.  (No.  You haven’t read this yet.  The first book will be out on August 28, as by Morgan Keyes.)  It’s due on April 1.

Then, yesterday, just as the edits were soaring along, I got a package from UPS.  Well, not actually from UPS.  By UPS, and from Simon & Schuster.  The package contained the page proofs of DARKBEAST — the typeset, gorgeously designed, last-chance-to-correct-changes pages.  It’s due on April 3.

I’ve also been working on some electronic books — omnibus editions of The Jane Madison Series and the As You Wish Series.  And there’s a Jane Madison/Fright Court novella that is almost ready to see the light of day.  Those don’t have a set due date, but I hope to get them out before May 1.

And then, on Wednesday, I had one of those crazy days, where I was meeting someone for lunch downtown, and I had dinner plans downtown, so I needed portable work to fill the intervening hours.  I’ve long had an idea for a … unique novella involving Fright Court, so I brought some documents with me and worked out the details.  The idea remains a good one — better, in some ways, than I’d initially thought it to be.  But it also needs some more cogitation, some more picking apart of the structure.

So.  One week.  Six projects.  (Plus freelance work, that was in there, too.  And responding to queries about my editing services, although no actualy editing there.  But editing for my First Reader.)

Like I said, juggle.  Juggle, juggle, juggle.

Mindy, who didn’t like the circus when she was a kid

P.S.  I also attended the WORST Smithsonian class ever on Wednesday night.  Those of you who read here on a regular basis no that I’m generally up for learning about any topic, any time.  Wednesday’s topic looked to be wonderful – “Math + Art = Origami”.  I expected it to be a lecture by a mathematician about how he applies his academic studies to paper-folding, sort of a math-ier version of the documentary Between the Folds.

I was wrong.  The TWO-HOUR class was a mathematician and his origami-making friend, walking around ten tables in the room, while 100 “students” sat there, folding origami, using photocopied pages from the mathematician’s book.

Yeah.  Worst Smithsonian class ever.  (I wouldn’t have minded, if the class had been listed as one of their “studio” classes, where students learn to create art.  But this was listed as a lecture!  And, while I mastered the house, the frog, and the box, I could not figure out the T-Rex.  And my patience was utterly gone by that point, anyway.)

Did I mention?  Worst Smithsonian class ever.  (At least, there was a satisfaction survey at the end, and I was able to express my disappointment.)

Disappearing Days

Last week was one of those weeks that just got busy.

You know the type.  I was just sitting at my desk, minding my own business, writing a novella, without a care in the world, when all of a sudden everything exploded.  (No, nothing bad.  In fact, a lot of things good.  Just things not anticipated.)

As a consequence, it’s now a Monday, and I’m sitting at my desk, minding my own business, writing a novella.

But I have some fun things I’m going to be sharing with you soon:

  • A new cover for the Jane Madison Omnibus (the first three volumes of Jane’s story, all in one volume, for easy downloading.)
  • A new cover for the As You Wish Omnibus.
  • A title for the upcoming Jane Madison/Fright Court novella.

In between those projects, I’m doing the usual freelance work — super secret projects for my law firm clients, an article for Romance Writers Report on “The Goldilocks Element — Backstory, and when You Know the Right Amount”, some editing work, some reading…

I also took in a couple of classes over the weekend — an all-day Smithsonian seminar on the art of Caravaggio (a favorite) and Rembrandt (a, um, not-favorite…), and an evening class about Beethoven’s cello concerto, which had *brilliant* performances by both cellist and pianist (and the spirited instruction by Rob Kapilow that we always enjoy.)

So.  Did I miss anything exciting last week?

Mindy, glad to be back

Ebooks for Good – Thank You!

As folks who read this blog last week know, I pledged to donate all of my receipts from Mindy Klasky ebooks published by Res Ipsa Press to Planned Parenthood, as a way of showing support in the wake of the Komen debacle.  The “week” for donations ran from January 29 through February 4, and it included books sold throughout the world.  And (drumroll please…) the total is in.  I will be donating:

$1520.54

Wow.  All I can say is, wow.  Thank you so much for your support, as this important story unfolded last week, with slippery public relations stories often obscuring one basic fact:  Planned Parenthood provides valuable cancer screening for people who would otherwise not be able to afford that basic health care.

Mindy, off to write a check
