Editing My Life Away…

Yesterday, just as the clock chimed six, I finished my final edits to THE DADDY DANCE (my second Special Editions category romance), and I sent them to my editor.  OK.  There wasn’t really a clock that chimed.  But there were some hungry kitties who demanded to be fed…

This was an interesting editing experience for me.  Typically, I submit a pretty clean manuscript.  When I receive my edit letters, they tend to say things like, “I just need a little bit more emphasis *here* on her motivation” or “This scene needs to be a bit tighter.”

For THE DADDY DANCE, I took a real chance when I drafted the novel.  I had submitted an outline early on in the process, and that outline was approved by my editor.  Nevertheless, as I wrote the actual book, I decided to tweak the hero’s motivation — I gave him a backstory that was complicated.  It didn’t put him in the best light in the present day.  It gave him a lot of reason to be angsty about the heroine, but …  Well it made him sort of a jerk.

In fact, he was too much of a jerk for my editor.  We talked about ways to modify his backstory, without capsizing the entire plot.  At one point, I thought that I was going to have to re-write about 25,000 words (which, for a 60,000 word novel, is a fair amount!)  But then, I realized that I could tweak his story here.  I could adjust it there.  I could explain what he was thinking in this other place.

And I completed my revisions.

I read through the entire book, from page one to “the end” yesterday.  And I’m really pleased with what I read.

Now, my fingers are crossed that my editor will like it as much as I do!

Mindy, off to work on some freelance projects for the rest of today…
